AlterMet

a wifi-hacking micro-Internet

In collaboration with Michael Anzouni

AlterMet is a feminist darknet, accessible by a Raspberry Pi-powered Wi-Fi hijacking device that serves restricted web content dedicated to uplifting the work and stories of women artists in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Visitors to the Museum could choose to log onto the “AlterMet” wifi network. Unlike traditional Wi-Fi networks, once connected, users can only navigate pages dedicated to women artists with work currently on display in the Museum. The hyper-site-specific work was installed via a small backpack-sized server located at various points in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The constrained web content available on AlterMet allowed museum attendees to gain greater insight into the lives, work, and legacies of women artists with work featured near their physical location. The web content served as an educational platform and a new media art environment created by Joselyn McDonald.

Once visitors to the Metropolitan Museum of Art logged into the AlterMet network, they were served hyper-local content featuring paged dedicated to women artists whose works were currently on display. The work aims to increase the visibility of underrepresented artists.
