This is Absurd! Exploring the Interaction Between Ideology and Perception in Digital Content
Absurd humor HCI research
Absurd humor is a stylistic device that is increasingly prevalent in all forms of digital communication. However, absurd humor has generated relatively little empirical attention within HCI. We conducted a study that investigated how two factors central to digital communication — the content of the media and the viewer’s ideological perspective — might impact individuals’ perceptions of and responses to absurd humor. We partnered with MTurk workers to test the impact of political ideology on viewers’ responses to a digital video featuring a college counselor discussing the topic of stereotyping. Results revealed a difference in responses to the video between self-identified liberal and non-liberal subjects.
